Access to health services as a social determinant of First Nations, Inuit and Métis health

January 2009

Access to health services refers to the ability of individuals or groups to obtain the services they need and is regarded as an important determinant of health. Indigenous populations do not have equitable access to accessing health services. This fact sheet provides an overview of the geographic, socio-economic, jurisdictional and cultural barriers to accessing health services, and some strategies for improving access to health services for Indigenous peoples.
